Do This One Thing at Back to School Night

This year, at back to school night, meet as many of your child’s teachers as you can, especially their primary teacher if they have one. Look your child’s teacher in the eye, shake their hand, and introduce yourself, using your child’s name as well as your own. Communicate that you care deeply about your child and their education. Share something you think it would be helpful for the teacher to know about your child. Get into a brief conversation if you can, and ask the teacher to let you know if you can be helpful.

There are many other useful things you can do at back to school night, but this is the most important. Your teacher needs to know that there is a caring, attentive adult in the background, ready to support their child — and the teacher.
