Spiritual Mentoring

PK through fifth grade

Cartoon: A person is reading a book titled, "How to Be in the Moment." Another book lying on the table in front of them is titled, "How to Be in the Moment After That."

Research shows spiritual practice improves children’s well-being. Spiritual Mentoring encourages you to consider participating in spiritual (not necessarily religious) community to help your child grow in their capacity to connect, feel awe, and make ethical choices.

Key Strategies

  • Cultivate your child’s sense of wonder. Give your child space and unstructured time at home and in nature to let their mind wander and discover the wonder around them. Don’t let electronic devices take over their lives.
  • Build spiritual community at home. You build spiritual community with your child when you dance or sing together, share delight at a new discovery or accomplishment, or work together to bring more light and connection to the world.
  • Connect your child to spiritual communities outside the home. Spiritual community can be found in religious institutions or in groups of people that share specific values and experiences (e.g. sports teams, summer camps, neighborhood friend groups, and community service programs).
