Pilot Voice

PK through fifth grade

Inspired by the communication style of pilots, Pilot Voice shows you how to talk in ways that increase the chances that your child will be able to hear and respond positively. To speak with Pilot Voice: slow down, lower the pitch, and moderate the volume.

“When we talk with Pilot Voice, our children are learning that we’re in control of ourselves, and that calm conversation is the best way to work through challenging situations.”

Key Strategies

To speak with Pilot Voice:

  • Slow down your speed. By consciously slowing down, you increase the chances that you’re heard, and you calm yourself
  • Lower your pitch. A lower-pitched voice signals self-control and authority
  • Moderate your volume. Speak loudly enough to be heard, but not so loudly that you produce a defensive reaction

When you speak with Pilot Voice, you give your child the space they need to learn how to integrate the lower part of their brain, the part that registers raw emotions like anger, with the upper part of their brain, the part that can think through problems rationally.
